Dustin Nguyen begins production on Monk on Fire (Buddha Fire) with Roger Yuan, Jason Ninh Cao and Veronica Ngo!

While waiting for things to get going on Iron Monk, Jason Nihn Cao has started working on Monk on Fire, a film that has been in development for a while, a project being directed by 21 Jumpstreet’s Dustin Nguyen (That will be the final time I associate his name with that show on this site) who scored a hit with the Vietnam martial arts epic The Rebel. Now things have gotten going, as the fight rehearsals have started. The film stars Dustin Nguyen, Roger Yuan, Veronica Ngo (Clash) and Jason Ninh Cao. Roger Yuan is also reported to be doing the fight choreography.

Information on the story is thin at the moment, but what is known is that it’s a fantasy martial arts story that revolves around a rivalry between two buddhist warriors (Nguyen and Yuan respectively).

I’ll get in touch with Jason Ninh Cao to see if he can give any more details. More to come!

Iron Monk Interviews with Jason Ninh Cao, Zara Phythian, and Vincent Wang

It feels like it’s been taking forever for Iron Monk to get off of the ground, but of course that’s my impatience. I’m still excited about this project, and it appears to be moving forward, even though I don’t think there has been a Director named yet. Check out their latest interview below:

I agree and disagree with Jason Ninh Cao’s assessment. I agree that it’s cool that they are eschewing the Hollywood aesthetic of CGI and wire fights, but I disagree with his assessment that those films are the ones he’s competing with. He’s got to compete with films like Ong Bak, The Protector, Chocolate, and The Raid, of which the last three are having sequels that may be out at the same time this film hits. I have good feelings about this film, so I think they’ll be fine. I’m just wondering when they will announce a director. Once they have that things will really start moving fast.

On a side note, g***damn is Silvio Simac is a big dude!

Iron Monk Teaser (In Production 2012)

Here is a very promising independent martial arts film that will go into production next year, titled the Iron Monk, about a peaceful shaolin monk who tries to spread a message of peace and zen in Chinatown, London, which brings him to the attention of the local Triads who attempt to destroy the monk and his peaceful teachings once and for all, and a battle for the soul of Soho Chinatown begins.

The film is being produced by veteran stuntman and actor Jason Ninh Cao (Snatch, Blitz) who also stars in the film, and the main lead is 34th generation Shaolin Master Yanzi Shi with fight choreography by Vincent Wang (the upcoming 47 Ronin and Batman Begins). The film is directed by Mat Sunderland.

This really looks promising, and film company JNC Productions looks to use this film to announce themselves as a company ready to compete in the realm of martial arts films. As the film goes into production I’ll update you fine folks on the status of it, and I’ll try to see if I can do a little Q & A with Jason Ninh Cao as the project ramps up. Thanks to reader Mikeoutwest for the heads up! For now, check out the trailer below,  and let me know what you think in the comments!
